It is necessary to run risks, follow certain paths and abandon others.
No one can make a choice without feeling fear. --Paulo Coehlo, Brida
This week, the girls take on songs of the 80s era.
First to perform was Asia'h Epperson with I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Simon thinks of her as a second-rate Whitney. She gladly takes the compliment(?). I thought this was American Idol, not "second-rate trying to copy someone idol". I really like her voice. Unfortunately, her song choices are too mainstream, too predictable, and do not match her vocal capabilities.
True vocal impersonator, Kady Malloy, sang Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen. Kady, Kady, Kady. I liked you...your previous performances. I am not sure if my ears were off last night. But I was really surprised when she received comments such as "To date this was your best performance". Based on past performances, I hope she makes it. If she does, I hope she sings half-pop-ish & half-opera-ish.
This week's VFTW pick for the girls is Amanda Overmyer. She performed Hate Myself for Loving You. Ha! Simon loved it! I loved it. I think she might have just secured a spot on the Top 12. (On a side note, doesn't she look like Candace Cameron Brue?)
What did you think of Carly Smithson's version of I Drove All Night (by Cyndi Lauper)? I like her song choice. I like her voice. But she makes this weird face when she's hitting the high notes. It looks almost like she's getting squished. It's a bit distracting. Anyhow, I think she has a sure spot in the top 12.
Ahhh, yes. Kristy Lee Cook plays the Randy Jackson card and sings Faithfully by Journey. Smart move. I'm still not a fan. She's gorgeous but I find her performances boring -- and like what Mr. Cowell said, forgettable.
Ramiele Malubay performed a simple and expected Against All Odds by Phil Collins. It's not that I did not like it...I just thought it was bland. If Danny Noriega & RM are BFFs, don't you think there should be some DN influence in her performance? Heehee. I wish she'd let loose a bit. She has an awesome voice but her song choices (and performances) make me think that they are too influenced by her parents' choices in their Magic Mic.
My favorite to date is still Brooke White (Ramiele, second). BW sang an acoustic version of Pat Benatar's Love is a Battlefield. I love that song. I love her voice. What more can I say? I'm pretty biased at this point.
Syesha Mercado's Saving All My Love For You garnered three goods from the judges. Simon added, "A bit predictable". I say boring. I just don't understand why these contestants keep forcing themselves to sing a Whitney Houston song when we all know that they will automatically be compared to her. To sing a WH song, you'd better be as good or better than her.
