Two months ago, we went on a trip. I felt that I needed to do some soul searching. I finished Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coehlo on my flight back home. Ironic? Not really. Anyone who has read the book will agree with me when I say that the story celebrates life, not death.
The story is centered around the life and attempted suicide of Veronika. She later wakes up in Villete, a mental hospital in Slovenia where she is told that she has only one week to live.
Reading the book solidified my belief that an awareness of death brings about an awareness of life. I have always been craven when it comes to death. I do not have enough courage to take my own life. I fear it so much that thinking about it not only weakens, but sometimes paralyzes me.
