I have been wearing corrective lenses for the past 19 years. My prescription started at a -0.75 (plus astigmatism), and reached a -9.25 (plus astigmatism). It got to a point that I could only resort to contact lenses because the prescriptions on my left and right eyes were so imbalanced.
I've been pondering the thought of having Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery since 1999. Although most of my friends who have undergone Lasik eye surgery have been satisfied with the results, I was still quite unsure.
Dr. Aller has been my optometrist for several years and he has helped me understand the risks, benefits, and types of Lasik surgery. He made sure that before I made my decision, my prescription was stable. He then performed several pre-operative eye exams to make sure that I was a good candidate for the surgery. I also had to stop wearing my contact lenses for 10 days prior to the surgery. That was quite a struggle.
Dr. Aller recommended Dr. Turner, who founded the Turner Eye Institute and has been performing IntraLASIK surgery since the Middle Ages (ok, so not since the middle ages – but for several years now).
On 20 December 2004, I had Conventional TFI-Lasik performed on my left eye, and Custom Wavefront TFI-Lasik on my right eye. Custom TFI-Lasik uses new digital technology that identifies and measures unique imperfections in your eye 25 times more precisely than conventional Lasik. The whole experience was DIFFERENT. I did not experience any pain at all. I was able to see right away after the procedure. However, my eyes were extremely sensitive to light. When I woke up the following day, my vision gradually became clearer. I had my first of a series of post-operative eye exams. I really can’t believe it!! My only complaint would be that I have too many drops to put in my eyes!!! I still think it's worth it!!!!! I no longer need my glasses or contact lenses to see or drive. It has been a very liberating experience!
